Does anybody like watching the Olympics? I'm not a big fan of the olympics.. I only like watch International hockey at the winter olympics.. as well as a glimpse of a couple of other sports sucha as speed skating and freestyle skiing but not much. The summer olympics i've never watched.

on that note why is the US good, really good, in every sport.. Hockey, Soccer, Baseball.. everything??

Especilly not Football (Soccer) and Baseball isn't really an international sport from last I knew.

Also I don't care much for the Olympics.

Why do you have a bad attitude on everything.. i can ask everybody on this forum if you have a negative topic on every topic (besides your own) and i wonder what ill get. I kinda have the feeling you need to rebel against peoples opinions on here all the time even though you're wrong.

US isn't good at everything?
do i even need to bring up the medal charts?

USA 35 39 29 T103

RUS 27 27 38 T92

CHN 32 17 14 T63

FIFA FOOTBALL.. as of May 2008, 21st.. which is not to shabby for a country who does not focus their sport program on soccer, but still good enough to qualify for the World.

^ which was not to to long ago btw
you can't blame them for finishing last in their 2006 WC group either (Czech, Italy, Ghana)

yeah but you're from England. last I knew they do not play baseball in England as much as it's a dominant sport in the Americas and Eastern Asia. that's a good portion of the world you got there.

Hockey
Soccer
Football
Basketball
Baseball
Lacrosse
Boxing
Mixed Martial Arts
Skiing
Speed Skating
Cycling
Track & Field
Tennis
Figure Skating (let's consider it a sport since it is played at sporting events)
Golf
Snowboarding
Extreme Sporting
Amateur Wrestling
Weight Lifting
(Beach&) Volleyball

these are all sports that the Americans have had top of the line world class succes at.. be it at one time or another. You don't have to belive me but the medal count speaks for itself.

this is where i say, the US is good at every sport.. apart from cricket and ping pong. despite my grammar.. the US has a respectable sports program that can't be denied or disagreed with.

*i myself wouldnt be suprised if they have had succes in other sports.. I just named those off the top of my head.

They've reached the world cup 8 times and their highest finishing position is 3rd and that was in 1930.

That didn't last for very long though, they finish 31st at the end of 2006 WHICH WAS NOT TO LONG AGO LOL.

Wow, didn't think that would count it as an olympic sport but okay, America won 1 gold and 1 bronze in that, GO AMERICA LOL! Cuba are better than the US at Baseball, 3 golds and 1 silver.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baseball_at_the_Summer_Olympics

Hockey: You mean Ice Hockey? Sorry, the USA ranks 3rd in that, Canada 1st and Russia 2nd.

Soccer: In the Mens ranking, the USA are 20th! And in the Womens, they are LAST! The UK who haven't entered the Mens as much as the US are 2nd with 3 Golds, so yeah, USA are far from good at this.

Football: American Football isn't an olympic sport that I can find the history of, Rugby is, but not American Football. Sorry.

Basketball: Okay, they rank 1st in this, I'll give you that.

Baseball: Beaten by Cuba here, so not the best.

Lacrosse: Joint 2nd with the UK.

Boxing: 1st in this, okay.

Mixed Martial Arts: I can't find mixed on the list, but Judo and Taekwondo are, the US don't rank too well in Judo but 4th in Taekwondo.

Skiing: Alpine skiing? They rank 4th in Alpine skiing.

Speed Skating: Yeah, okay, 1st in this too.

Cycling: Can't find a table for this.

Track & Field: Or this, be more specific?

Tennis: They are 1st in this but only because they have 1 more gold than the UK. The UK has 40 Medals in this compared to the USAs 30.

Figure Skating: Okay, 1st.

Golf: Can't find a table of winners for this.

Snowboarding: 1st again, wow.

Extreme Sporting: EXTREAM!! I've no idea what this is, sorry.

Amateur Wrestling: We'll just call it Wrestling, I'm guessing 1st here, can't find a table of it.

Weight Lifting: Soviet Union beat the USA in this, sorry.

Volleyball: Again, 2nd in this, so not the best.

The US also has more people than most other nations but you know, they still aren't the best at everything. Such as; Triathlon, Field hockey, Curling, Ski jumping, I could go on but I'd rather not. Sure there are some things they are good at.

I'm more supprised you wouldn't have also said Athletics and Swimming, those are the two they have gotten the majority of their medals from in the Summer Olymipics. Infact that's what the most are from overall anyway.

718 from Athletics and 485 from Swimming, you can see more here.

I'll only quote this, so it should represent everything you've researched.. and since it's hockey, i might as well say i thoughtthey were even more down the rankings, maybe 5th or 6th place. but the point still stands, they are a power house, in all the sports i've mentioned, (DUH i knew CANADA was 1st) and you looked up.. sure, they are not in 1st place in everything, sure they are not the best in everything but the fact remains that they are good. I never said they were the BEST but i did say they were good you even did the research for me. are you saying a 2nd place finish is no good? Oh and while we're at it

Cycling: American champion at the tour de France for 8 straight years (currently)
Race Car Driving: American representives finished 2nd on the world stage as of 2007

I guess the US don't care to much of soccer if they can let down a 4th place lead and drop to 21.

being good doesn't mean you're the king of kings.

I didn't count those as this topic is about the Olympics.

I don't think 4th was anything that would have stayed anyway, probably down to a few matchs they won against easy opponents. They've been in the top 20 before though, but still not great at the sport.

Eitherway, what I'm trying to say is, they aren't good at everything, that's all I am saying.

If I asked why are they good at a very large number of sports, what could be the reason.. that is what i wanted to know.

succesful Ski jumpers ;)

okay you're right not EVERYTHING.. but, alot of sports, most of which are reknowed world wide. More than 3 quarters of the sports we've mentioned include a succesful US team, unless you can define etc.

Curling

Curling ^i admit i didnt even know this, but they are succesful curles, even though i dont consider curling a sport :p

They fail at Ski jumping, they are 14th which is last in that event.

Cross-country skiing, Luge, Polo, Modern pentathlon, Water polo and Fencing are others they are bad at. There are some that they aren't so good at but aren't bad either.

yeah but did you check the women's ranking

cross country, they are well represented on the world stage in recent years and in not so recent years.
Gold in '32, Gold in '02 for that event olympics

water polo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FINA_Water_Polo_World_League
the womens' team leads in medal count events

Fencing the U.S are treading water.. the site is in french, although i wont post their best finish was 8th place out of 50

they've had succes on the polo scene as well.. i found a good site but lost it.

luge looks like it's being dominated by Germans and Italians. then agains the word Luge sounds german.

well, you see the point i'm trying to make, you keep bringing up sports and telling me that the USA is not good at them, yet a handfull of those sports you bring up.. USA has done a succesful run in them.
